Artist Statement:

I have always had an innate desire to figure out how things are made. Growing up in a family that did everything themselves planted the seed of a Craftsman at a young age. The famous question of my childhood was: “how is that made, how does that work?” My college education began in the year 2000 at Humboldt State University with a major in studio arts. I attended for five years and emphasized in jewelry for my last three years.

I have used a range of materials from sterling silver, copper, precious gemstones, and rosewood. My use of Metal and gemstones is important, for I love to create things that can withstand the test of time. The found artifacts of ancient lost civilizations is almost always their Jewelry and Sculpture. Creating metal art is like making artifacts to reflect this time for future civilizations to discover. The use of rosewood is symbolic to the impermanence cellular life structure of wood. Wood grain has the quality of being one of a kind just like hand made art.

When working with metal and gemstones I like to imagine it as a meditative process, an unspoken dialogue between man and mineral. Creating that piece becomes a mission to make a home for the gems so they become a form of wearable Jewelry to accent ones beauty. The gems serve as my guidance for design. When the design is set I then begin the fabrication process. When the form is created I view the piece in a critical manner to see if any evolving needs to occur before the stones are set. With commissioned work I stop the evolution process from occurring unless the client wants to review the piece prior to completion.

The rosewood pieces are specific ancient designs that hold crucial knowledge about us as humans. These designs are old ancient symbols that reveal secrets about life on this planet in past, present and future times. The rosewood is from the South American rain forest. All the rosewood I use is recycled from the scraps of marimba keys.

Every human being is a unique entity that differs slightly in design from another; this makes no two humans the same. This reality is the core factor why I believe that every human has a strong attraction to personal art and jewelry. Connecting with a hand made object allows the self to see within. These objects can often bring us feelings of past, present, or future emotions that allow us to see or think out of the norm.

Making art has become my lifestyle; it is the way I see and function in this world. I gather inspiration from natural form because it holds a sacred geometry.
